What Are AEO and GEO? How to Get Your Business Found in AI Search
A few years ago, getting found online meant one thing: ranking on the first page of Google. Today your customers also get answers directly on the results page, ask voice assistants, and increasingly ask AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for recommendations.
That's why two new terms have joined SEO: AEO and GEO. Here's what they mean, in plain language.
---
SEO — Search Engine Optimization
SEO helps your web pages rank in the list of search results. It covers:
• Technical health — fast pages, mobile-friendly design, clean code, no indexing errors
• On-page optimisation — clear titles, headings and content that match what people search
• Authority — trustworthy links and mentions from other websites
• Local SEO — a complete Google Business Profile and consistent business details
SEO is still the foundation. AI tools and answer boxes mostly draw from pages that search engines already trust.
---
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization
AEO focuses on being chosen as the direct answer — in featured snippets, "People Also Ask" boxes, voice search results and Google AI Overviews.
What helps:
• Answer real questions clearly. Put a short, direct answer (40–60 words) right below a question-style heading, then expand.
• Use formats engines can lift. Numbered steps, short lists, simple tables and clear definitions.
• Add structured data. FAQ, HowTo, Product, LocalBusiness and other schema help engines understand your content.
• Write the way people speak. Voice searches are longer and more conversational — "Which is the best clinic near me that's open on Sunday?"
---
GEO — Generative Engine Optimization
GEO is about how AI assistants describe and recommend your brand when they generate an answer. These systems summarise many sources, so they favour brands that are clear, consistent and well referenced.
What helps:
• A clear entity. Your business name, services, location and founder described the same way on your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories.
• Citable content. Specific facts, clear explanations and original insights are easier for AI to quote than vague marketing copy.
• Mentions on trusted sites. Local news, industry directories, partner websites and genuine reviews all strengthen the signal.
• Access for AI crawlers. Make sure your robots.txt doesn't accidentally block them, and consider an llms.txt file that summarises your site.

Can Anyone Guarantee AI Will Recommend You?
No. AI answers change depending on the question, the model and the user. Anyone promising a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT or AI Overviews isn't being honest. What you can do is improve the signals these systems rely on — and those same improvements also strengthen your regular SEO.
